He was supposed to be born a perfectly healthy child, however, as soon as he came into the world, he suddenly began to turn blue. At the maternity hospital in Bila Tserkva, the doctors frankly told his mother they were helpless. And Sasha Borysenko was sent to Kyiv. Urgently. Because every minute was a matter of life and death.
Kyiv. The M.M. Amosov National Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery. The child was urgently examined, and the diagnosis that literally knocked the ground out from under his mother's feet was immediately established – transposition of the great arteries. This is a congenital defect in which the main vessels leading from the heart – the aorta and the pulmonary artery trunk – are switched in position. Imagine if your arms grew instead of your legs, and your legs instead of your arms.
Speaking of what happens to the little one's body, there are two unconnected circulatory systems inside him. Oxygen-poor venous blood from the right atrium enters the right ventricle, from there into the aorta that branches off it, and then into the systemic circulation. Since it bypasses the lungs, it doesn't get a chance to become oxygenated. At the same time, blood from the lungs travels through the pulmonary veins to the left atrium, then to the left ventricle, into the pulmonary artery, and back to the lungs.
Transposition of the great arteries is a condition incompatible with life. Therefore, Sasha was urgently scheduled for surgery. However, it was not possible to perform it immediately: his blood counts critically dropped, his temperature rose, and he was forced to fight for his life in intensive care for another week.
Finally, on his 14th day of life, the infant was taken to the operating room. For long eight hours, cardiac surgeons reconstructed the tiny, sick heart, correctly positioning the vessels. Despite the extreme complexity and tension, fortunately, everything went successfully.
The child spent some more time in intensive care, and then he was transferred to a regular ward. Sasha Borysenko's life is no longer in danger. His mother, Diana Lisova, sincerely thanks Ruslan Stanislavovych Shostak for providing medications in intensive care and расходные материалы (consumables) in the operating room. Thanks to this help, the family, which could not afford the expensive treatment for their little son, did not have to look for funds.
