Сашко чекав 9 років на операцію

The mother learned that her little daughter had heart problems at the 37th week of pregnancy. Previously, the mother was scheduled for a cesarean section and planned to give birth in Bila Tserkva. However, during a routine ultrasound, the doctors suspected a problem with the baby's heart, so the mother was immediately sent for a check-up at the regional hospital for a follow-up examination.

After confirming that the future daughter had indeed developed serious heart defects, the family was referred to Okhmatdyt, where the final diagnosis was made – transposition of the great arteries.

Such a pathology may seem somewhat absurd, as it is characterized by the incorrect placement of blood vessels in the heart, and as a result, the two circulatory systems close and are completely unconnected to each other. Thus, the blood is unable to adequately saturate the entire body with oxygen. While the baby is in the womb, it receives everything it needs. But on its own, it will not cope, so complex surgery will be necessary, which should be done as soon as possible.

This is exactly what the mother was told when she arrived at the Amosov Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery from Okhmatdyt. The first surgery took place in October 2020, less than a month after Amelia was born. Doctors redirected the incorrectly positioned vessels in her heart. After that, she needed another four days in intensive care, and then the girl was transferred to a regular ward with her mother. In total, she spent three weeks at the Amosov Institute.

Every month, the mother and daughter traveled to the Amosov Institute for ECHO and scheduled check-ups. But recently, the child began to frequently lose consciousness and gasp for air. Doctors said that another surgery was needed. This was a Glenn procedure, in which the superior vena cava is redirected in such a way that it connects to the right pulmonary artery. This was a rather complex task for the cardiac surgeons, on which they worked for about 9 hours. But thanks to their professionalism, everything went successfully. After that, the girl spent 6 days in intensive care.

Doctors give good prognoses. Her condition improved rapidly, so she was discharged home. In approximately three years, depending on how this tiny organism develops, the girl will need another surgery.

The parents are very grateful that thanks to the Charity Chain project from Guzema Fine Jewelry, assistance was provided in supplying all the necessary materials and medications during Amelia's stay in intensive care. We wish her a speedy recovery and hope that her heart will no longer prevent her from living.
