The stories of our brave young patients with heart defects are always filled with challenges — but also with hope and, ultimately, happy endings. One of these extraordinary journeys is the recovery story of 7-year-old Maksym, who was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect at birth.
In his hometown of Chernivtsi, during a routine check-up at two and a half months old, Maksym’s parents received devastating news: their son had been diagnosed with bicuspid aortic stenosis.
Without treatment, this defect can lead to serious complications, including sudden death.
Aortic stenosis means that the opening of the aorta is narrowed, making it difficult for blood to flow from the left ventricle to the aorta. As a result, the left ventricle must work much harder than normal, which eventually leads to the heart’s inability to pump effectively. In such cases, urgent surgery is always required.
The very next day, the family was referred to the Amosov Institute in Kyiv, where children with congenital heart defects are placed under observation.
Maksym was monitored monthly, but doctors kept repeating: "It’s still too early for surgery."
Twice a year, Maksym was hospitalized for planned check-ups. However, after the start of the full-scale invasion, due to the risk of shelling, the family could no longer travel to Kyiv.
In the summer of 2023, doctors from the Amosov Institute visited Chernivtsi, examined Maksym, and determined that it was time for surgery.
Specialists spent five hours correcting Maksym’s heart defect. Afterward, he spent about a day and a half in intensive care and more than a week recovering in a hospital room alongside his mother.
In cases of severe stenosis, doctors usually recommend valve replacement, so it is already clear that Maksym will need another surgery in the future.
Despite the beginning of a long treatment journey, Maksym remains cheerful.
He loves playing with toy cars and shows impressive logical thinking skills. His mother believes that he will become a future IT specialist — he easily handles phones, asks very mature questions, and often answers them himself with surprising insight.
Thanks to Lancôme and our joint Mother’s Day initiative, Maksym received the necessary medications and medical supplies during his stay at the Amosov Institute.
