Partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection is a fairly common congenital heart defect, but its variations exist, and the level of threat to the baby's life is determined accordingly. This diagnosis is characterized by the incorrect placement of the pulmonary veins. In a healthy heart, they drain into the left atrium.
But in Alinka, several pulmonary veins were connected to the right atrium, which made certain blood circulation functions impossible and slowed down other processes in her body. Moreover, the defect can be accompanied by a number of other issues. Such patients can be saved if they promptly consult specialized cardiologists and undergo surgery. Fortunately, this is what happened in Alinka's life.
The girl was 2.5 years old when a doctor heard murmurs in her heart during an examination. Her mother immediately became worried, as she had been observing symptoms in the little girl for a long time: lethargy, bluishness of the lips and extremities, and poor appetite. In the hospital of Izmail, Alinka underwent examinations and an ultrasound.
The diagnosis was confirmed. The family immediately began looking for possible ways to help the girl, one of which was to consult doctors who are experts in congenital heart defects and could help. Thanks to acquaintances with doctors from the Amosov Heart Institute, the girl was brought for a consultation. In Kyiv, the girl was immediately admitted to intensive care and prepared for surgery.
For 2.5 hours, doctors worked to improve blood circulation in the vessels. During her stay in intensive care, the child was provided with the necessary medications and medical supplies thanks to the help of the Charity Chain project – a joint project of the Guzema Fine Jewelry brand and the "Tvoya opora" charitable foundation.
Alina spent another day in intensive care, and after that, she was transferred to a regular ward. Doctors do not give clear prognoses and are waiting for a consultation in 6 months. Further interventions may be needed, but with small, yet confident steps, we are moving towards recovery.
